Vroeger kon je heel gemakkelijk zonder visum of ESTA op vakantie naar de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Sinds de aanslagen op de Twin Towers in New York op 11 september 2001 zijn de regels helaas aangescherpt.

Geen visum maar een ESTA?

Om naar Amerika te reizen heb je in de meeste gevallen geen echt visum nodig, maar moet je reistoestemming aanvragen. Dit staat bekend als het Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). De ESTA aanvragen moet je uiterlijk 72 uur voor vertrek regelen. Boek dus nooit vlak van tevoren een vliegticket als je de ESTA nog moet aanvragen. Mocht je geen toestemming krijgen dan moet je de vlucht annuleren en dat is zonde. Een ESTA voor Amerika is 2 jaar geldig vanaf afgifte, of tot de verloopdatum van uw paspoort wanneer dit eerder is.

Geen ESTA maar toch een visum?

U dient wel een visum voor Amerika aan te vragen indien:

• You want to stay in America for more than 90 consecutive days
• You want to work in the USA
• You are inadmissible on the basis of the “Immigration and Nationality Act (212)”
• You travel to America for purposes other than tourism or business
• You travel to the USA with an airline or transport company that is not affiliated with the “Visa Waiver Program”.
• You have been in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Libya or Somalia since 2011, have or have ever had the nationality of one of these countries

You do not need a visa if you are on a business trip and you are staying in America for less than 90 consecutive days, so that: You can attend meetings, visit your customers or visit your suppliers.

Application procedure ESTA America

Applying for your ESTA via this e-visa direct is quick and easy.

• It is important that the details you enter exactly match those on your passport.
• You can complete the application form in Dutch. Always double check that you have correctly copied the data from your passport.
• Do you want to request an ESTA for several people? If you click on ‘add traveler’ at the bottom of the form, you can enter the details of the next person.
• You will receive your e-visa in your mailbox as soon as possible.

If the details on your e-visa do not match those on your passport or identity card, your e-visa is not valid.

Request conditions ESTA America

When applying for an ESTA you must meet a number of conditions as a citizen of the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany:

• You cannot stay in the United States for more than 90 days.
• You must have a passport that is at least valid during your stay in the America. It must therefore be valid for three months.
• Babies and children need their own passport for a holiday in America and therefore they also have to apply for an ESTA.
• You must have a flight ticket for the return trip to the Netherlands or for a flight to another destination outside of America.
• Since 1 April 2016, all travelers to America must be in possession or e-passport. This passport has an electronic chip with information about, for example, a digital photo, fingerprints and the signature. The e-passport can be recognized by the e-symbol on the cover and the holder page (the page on which your personal data and photo are).
• You may not have traveled to Iran, Iraq after 1 March 2011. Libya, Syria, Yemen, Sudan or Somalia.
• You want to travel to America for a vacation or a business trip, not for other purposes.
